RESUMEN El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar las variables hortícolas de la lechuga iceberg utilizando dos dosis de compost Bokashi, solo y en combinación, con el bioactivador Penergetic (Penergetic International AG®) frente a la fertilización mineral estándar (NPK) en tres ciclos de cultivo. Los experimentos se realizaron en un invernadero de plástico en la Universidade Estadual de Londrina, Brasil (548 msnm). Los tratamientos fueron: control negativo (agua solamente); control positivo (NPK, 4-14-8); Penergetic solo; Bokashi en dosis de 5 y 10 g/planta con o sin combinación con Penergetic. Las plantas de lechuga se cultivaron en macetas llenas de tierra. Se evaluaron biomasa comercial (BC), diámetro de cabeza (DC), altura de planta (AP) e índice de clorofila (IC). En los tres ciclos evaluados, los tratamientos Bokashi 10 g/planta, Bokashi 10 g/planta + Penergetic y NPK superaron al testigo. En general, las variables estudiadas (BC, DC, AP y CI) en el tratamiento de menor dosis de Bokashi también fueron más altas que el control pero menores que con la dosis más alta de Bokashi y NPK. Penergetic aumentó la BC en el tratamiento con dosis más bajas de Bokashi solo en el primer ciclo de producción, probablemente debido al bajo contenido de materia orgánica en el suelo. El tratamiento Bokashi 10 g/planta mejoró significativamente las variables hortícolas de la lechuga frente al tratamiento de control y fue similar a la fertilización química en dos de los tres ciclos de cultivo.

ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to compare horticultural variables of iceberg lettuce using two Bokashi compost doses, alone and in combination, with the bioactivator Penergetic (Penergetic International AG®) against standard mineral fertilization (NPK) in three crop cycles. Experiments were conducted in a plastic greenhouse at the Universidade Estadual de Londrina, Brazil (548 m a.s.l.). The treatments were: negative control (water only); positive control (NPK, 4-14-8); Penergetic alone; Bokashi doses 5 g and 10 g/plant with or without a combination with Penergetic. Lettuce plants were grown in pots filled with soil. Commercial biomass (CM), head diameter (HD), plant height (PH) and chlorophyll index (CI) were evaluated. In the three cycles tested, the Bokashi 10 g/plant, Bokashi 10 g/plant + Penergetic, and NPK treatments surpassed the control. The studied variables (CM, HD, PH and CI) in the lower Bokashi dose treatment were also higher than controls but lower than higher Bokashi doses and NPK. Penergetic increased the CM in the lower Bokashi dose treatment just in the first production cycle, probably due to the poor organic matter content in the soil. The treatment Bokashi 10 g/plant improved significantly the lettuce horticultural variables vs. control treatments and was similar to chemical fertilization in two of three crop cycles.

ABSTRACT Extracts of the seeds of Tephrosia vogelii Hook. f. were studied in relation to its chemical composition and toxicity to the brown stink bug Euschistus heros (F.). The extracts were obtained in ethyl acetate and ethanol in the sequence according to the polar nature of the solvents. Extracts were sprayed in concentration of 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10% on third-instars nymphs and adults, and mortality was recorded. Presence two rotenoids in ethyl acetate was detected, with analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Crude fraction analyses confirmed the presence of these rotenoids (tephrosin - 2.71% in ethyl acetate and 3.66% in methanol; and deguelin - 10.46% in ethyl acetate and 1.22% in methanol) and three other rotenoids in small amounts. Eight days after applications, ethyl acetate caused more stink bugs mortality and on less time than ethanol extract, because great quantity of rotenoids, as polarity. Concentrations above to 1 and 2.5% of the ethyl acetate extracts caused mortality above 80% of the nymphs and adults of E. heros, respectively. Concentration were considered high, thus chemist analyzes demonstrated high rotenoids presence. In conclusion, seed T. vogelli extracts, rich in deguelin and tephrosin (3:1), cause mortality of E. heros, however, high concentration are necessary.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência dos sistemas de cultivo, orgânico e convencional, e também de cultivares sobre a qualidade pós-colheita, atividade antioxidante e aceitabilidade de frutos de morango. Os frutos das cultivares Albion, Monterey e San Andreas foram analisados em relação ao teor de sólidos solúveis (SS), acidez titulável (AT), relação SS/AT, coloração dos frutos, teor de vitamina C, atividade antioxidante, composição mineral e aceitabilidade dos frutos de morango das cultivares Albion, Monterey e San Andreas. Os sistemas de cultivo e cultivares influenciaram o teor de SS, AT, pH, relação SS/AT e coloração dos frutos. O teor da vitamina C dos frutos da cv. Monterey foi superior (78,68 mg ácido ascórbico 100 g-1) ao teor da cv. San Andreas (70,28 mg ácido ascórbico 100 g-1) no sistema convencional, ao passo que no sistema orgânico, as cultivares não diferiram entre si. Além disso, não foram observadas diferenças entre as cultivares e sistemas de cultivo para a atividade antioxidante. Com relação aos sistemas de cultivo e as cultivares, os mesmos não tiveram efeito sobre o teor dos minerais P, Cu e Mg. Os frutos de morango da cv. Monterey no sistema convencional obtiveram melhores valores de aceitação (7,51), diferente do observado para a cv. San Andreas no sistema orgânico com valores menos aceitos pelos consumidores (6,58).

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of organic and conventional cultivation systems and the cultivars on the postharvest quality, antioxidant activity and acceptability of strawberries. Strawberries of the cultivars Albion, Monterey and San Andreas were analysed with respect to the soluble solids content (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, fruit colour, vitamin C content, antioxidant activity by the DDPH method, mineral composition and acceptability. The cultivation systems and cultivars had different influences on the SS, TA, pH, SS/TA and colour of the strawberries. The vitamin C content of cv. Monterey was higher (78.68 mg ascorbic acid 100 g-1) than that of cv. San Andreas (70.28 mg ascorbic acid 100 g-1) in the conventional system, while in the organic system, the cultivars did not differ. Differences were not observed amongst the cultivars and cultivation conditions for antioxidant activity and the cultivation systems and cultivars had no effect on the P, Cu and Mg mineral contents. The conventionally cultivated strawberries of cv. Monterey obtained the highest value for acceptance (7.51) while the organically cultivated strawberries of cv. San Andreas received the lowest value (6.58).

Se evaluaron los parámetros biológicos de Chrysoperla externa en condiciones de laboratorio. El efecto de las presas sobre los parámetros biológicos y el comportamiento reproductivo fueron evaluados cuando se proporcionaron los siguientes alimentos: Sitobion avenae; Rhopasolsiphum padi (ambos en los tres estadios larvales); huevos de Anagasta kuehniella del primero al segundo estadio y huevos de Dichelops melacanthus en tercer estadio; R. padi del primero al segundo estadio y huevos de D. melacanthus en tercero. Todos los alimentos determinaron desarrollo y desempeño reproductivo satisfactorios. El cambio de presa de A. kuehniella a D. melacanthus no afectó la viabilidad de las larvas, pero sí la redujo el cambio de R. padi a D. melacanthus. Cuando las larvas se alimentaron con R. padi (primer y segundo estadio) y D. melacanthus (tercer estadio), C. externa puso más huevos que cuando se proporcionaron los áfidos. Como consecuencia del cambio de dieta, otros parámetros no fueron afectados o sólo ligeramente. Los resultados mostraron que los áfidos son importantes fuentes de alimento para C. externa y que este depredador también puede consumir y desarrollarse con huevos de D. melacanthus.

Biological parameters of Chrysoperla externa were assessed in laboratory. The effect of the preys on biological parameters and reproductive performance were assessed when the following food treatments were provided: Sitobion avenae in all larval instars; Rhopasosiphum padi in all larval instars; Anagasta kuehniella eggs in the first and second instars and Dichelops melacanthus eggs in the third; R. padi in the first and second instars and D. melacanthus in the third instar. All foods provided satisfactory development and reproductive performance. Changing larvae food from A. kuehniella to D. melacanthus did not affect its survival. However, changing larvae food from R. padi to D. melacanthus reduced survival. When larvae were fed with R. padi (1st and 2nd instars) and D. melacanthus (3rd instar), C. externa laid more eggs than when larvae were fed only with aphids. Other parameters either were not affected, or were little affected by the diet change. Results showed that aphis are important food sources for C. externa, and this predator may also predate and develop on D. melacanthus eggs.

As orquídeas tornaram-se parcela importante do mercado da floricultura nacional. Arundina graminifolia é uma orquídea terrestre, produz flores atraentes e uma espécie que poderia ser uma candidata potencial para o mercado da floricultura, entretanto, sua altura considerável torna difícil seu transporte e comercialização. Alguns reguladores de crescimento de plantas têm sido utilizados para controlar a altura em plantas ornamentais e em outras espécies. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a eficiência dos reguladores de crescimento, paclobutrazol e cloreto de chlormequat no desenvolvimento vegetativo da orquídea A. graminifolia em vasos, visando o controle de altura. Paclobutrazol (Cultar) foi aplicado a 0, 5, 10 e 20 mg L-1, e CCC (Cycocel) foi aplicado a 0; 2000; 4000 e 6000 mg L-1. As plantas foram avaliadas mensalmente para altura de planta e número de brotos por vaso. CCC não teve efeito sobre a altura final das plantas nas concentrações aplicadas. Paclobutrazol foi eficaz no controle de altura da planta na concentração de 5 mg L-1, mas concentrações mais elevadas (10 e 20 mg L-1) provou ser tóxico para as plantas, causando a morte em brotos novos. Paclobutrazol em concentrações mais baixas oferece um meio viável para o controle de altura em A. graminifolia.

Orchids have become an important portion of the international floriculture market. Arundina graminifolia is a terrestrial orchid that produces attractive flowers, and, although the species could be a potential candidate for the floriculture market, its considerable height makes it difficult to transport and commercialize. A number of plant growth regulators have been utilized to control plant height in ornamentals and other species. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of growth regulators, paclobutrazol and chlormequat chloride on the vegetative development of containerized A. graminifolia orchid aiming at height control. Paclobutrazol (Cultar) was applied at 0, 5, 10, and 20 mg L-1, and CCC (Cycocel) was applied at 0, 2000, 4000, and 6000 mg L-1. The plants were assessed monthly for the plant height and number of shoots per container. CCC had no effect on the final height of plants at the concentrations applied. In contrast, paclobutrazol was effective in controlling plant height at a concentration of 5 mg L-1, but higher concentrations (10 and 20 mg L-1) proved to be toxic to the plants, causing death to the new shoots. Paclobutrazol at lower concentrations offers a viable means for height control in A. graminifolia.

Lavouras de morango recebem várias aplicações de agrotóxicos e resíduos nos frutos são recorrentes. O desenvolvimento e a aplicação de métodos de manejo que evitem a aplicação de pesticidas, principalmente durante o período de frutificação, é uma necessidade iminente. Compararam-se as populações do ácaro rajado Tetranychus urticae Koch. em plantas adubadas com fertilizantes orgânicos e minerais (como o usados por produtores) e tratadas com produtos alternativos. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos, em casa de vegetação infestada de população local do ácaro. Extratos de Tephrosia voggelii (Hook), óleo de nim (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) e calda sulfocálcica foram pulverizados três vezes em intervalos de 10 dias. As avaliações foram realizadas três vezes após cada pulverização. A interação entre a fertilização e produtos alternativos em pulverização foi também avaliada, mas não foi significativa. A população do ácaro foi cerca de 44% menor em plantas fertilizadas com fertilizante orgânico do que aquelas com fertilizante mineral. Extrato de T. voggelii reduziu em grande quantidade a população do ácaro; o óleo de nim reduziu em algumas avaliações e redução intermediária foi observada com calda sulfocálcica. Adubação orgânica e extrato de T. voggeli são estratégias potenciais para manejar a população de ácaros e estudos adicionais são propostos para permitir ampla utilização

Strawberry fields receive several pesticides spraying and residues in fruits are recurrent. Development and application of methods that avoid applying pesticides mostly during fructification period are imminent needs. Comparison of population of two-sppoted spider mite (TSSM) Tetranychus urticae Koch. in organic and mineral fertilized plants (as used by growers) and treated with alternative products were done. Plants were grown in vessels in a greenhouse infested with local population of TSSM. Extracts of Tephrosia voggeli (Hook), neem oil (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.), and lime sulfur were applied three times against TSSM in ten days intervals. Assessments were done three times after each spraying. Interaction between fertilization and spraying alternatives was also assessed but was not significant. TSSM population was about 44% lesser in organic fertilized plants than those in inorganic fertilized. T. voggeli extracts reduced in large amounts TSSM; neem oil reduced in some assessments and an intermediate reduction was found for sulfur lime. Organic fertilization and T. voggeli extracts are potential strategies to manage TSSM and additional studies are proposed to enable wide utilization

Avaliou-se a viabilidade da exploração do morangueiro, no Paraná, em duas áreas, 0,3 ha (área média cultivada pela agricultura familiar) e 1 ha, por um ano. Elaborou-se uma planilha de fluxo de caixa a partir da qual se calcularam: Período de Recuperação do Capital (PRC), Retorno sobre Investimento (RI), Valor Presente Líquido (VPL) e Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR). Todos para Custo Operacional Efetivo (COE), Custo Operacional Total (COT) e Custo Total de Produção (CTP). Para uma situação considerada normal, os indicadores de rentabilidade calculados foram (Tipo de custo: VPL área-padrão (TIR área- padrão) / VPL área efetiva (TIR área efetiva)) COE: US$ 17.856,55 (42%) / US$ 4.795,85 (39%); COT: US$ 5.182,40 (11%) / - US$ 1.691,97 (-13%); CPT: US$ 4.846,26 (10%) / -US$ 1.792,80 (-14%). Fez-se a análise de cenários para os fatores produtividade, preço de venda e mão de obra, analisando o VPL e a TIR. Verificou-se que o tamanho da área influenciou na viabilidade econômica, mostrando a importância de se determinar anualmente a área mínima viável para a agricultura familiar. Os resultados indicaram que a cultura é viável em curto prazo, quando considerado o COE como parâmetro de análise, mas pode não se sustentar em prazos maiores quando se consideram o COT, o CTP e a variação de alguns fatores de produção. Pela análise de cenários definidos pelos fatores de produção analisados, o VPL e a TIR alteram-se para níveis que oferecem risco à exploração.

We evaluated the viability of the strawberry small farm in Paraná, in two areas, 0.3 ha (average area cultivated by family farms) and 1 ha, during a year. A spreadsheed cash flow was prepared in which it was calculated: Payback Period of Capital (PPC), Return on Investment (ROI), Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). All for Operational Cost Effective (OCE), Total Operating Cost (TOC) and Total Cost of Production (TCP). In a situation considered normal, profitability indicators calculated were (Cost Type: NPV standard area (IRR standard area) / NPV effective area (effective area IRR)) OCE: US$ 17.856,55 (42%) / US$ 4.795,85 (39%); TOC: US$ 5.182,40 (11%) / - US$ 1.691,97 (-13%), TCP: US$ 4.846,26 (10%) /- US$ 1.792,80 (- 14%). A scenario analysis was made for the factors productivity, sales price and manpower, analyzing the NPV and IRR. The size of the area influenced the economic viability, showing the importance of determining annually the minimum viable area for family farms. The results indicated that culture is viable in the short term, when considered as a parameter of the OCE analysis, but can not be sustained in longer when considering the TOC, TCP and variation of some factors of production. By analysis of scenarios defined by production factors, NPV and IRR change to risky levels exploitation.

O efeito da utilização do extrato pirolenhoso (EPL) aplicado isoladamente e em mistura com adubação orgânica e química foi avaliado no desenvolvimento de mudas de areca bambu. Os tratamentos foram T1= sem adubação (testemunha); T2= T2= EPL 0,1%; T3= EPL 0,2%; T4= NPK-20-5-20; T5= NPK-20-5-20 + EPL 0,1%; T6= NPK-20-5-20 + EPL 0,2%; T7= torta de mamona; T8= torta de mamona + EPL 0,1% e T9= torta de mamona + EPL 0,2%. As soluções de EPL foram 0,1% e 0,2%, aplicados 100 mL por vaso, quinzenalmente. O adubo químico NPK 20-5-20 foi aplicado trimestralmente e a torta de mamona, adubo orgânico utilizado, foi aplicado mensalmente (ambos 40 g por vaso). A altura da planta, o número de folhas e o número de brotações foram avaliados após um ano do início do experimento. A adubação orgânica isolada e com adição de EPL (T7, T8 e T9) proporcionou maiores alturas de planta e maior número de folhas. A adubação orgânica com a adição de EPL 0,1 e 0,2% produziu mais brotos. Para todas as variáveis, a adubação química com e sem o EPL foram menos efetivas que a adubação orgânica com EPL e os tratamentos com EPL isoladamente foram menos efetivos que os tratamentos com adubação orgânica.

The effect of using chemical fertilization, organic and pyroligneous extract (EPL) on the seedling development of areca bamboo palm was evaluated. Treatments were: T1 = no fertilizer (control), T2 = 0.1% EPL, T3 = 0.2% EPL, T4 = NPK-20-5-20, T5 = NPK-20-5-20 + 0.1% EPL, T6 = NPK-20-05-20 + 0.2% EPL, T7 = castor bean cake, T8 = castor bean cake + 0.1% EPL and T9 = castor bean cake + 0.2% EPL. The EPL solutions were 0.1 or 0.2%, 100 mL per pot, applied every two weeks. NPK 20-5-20 chemical fertilizer was applied at three month intervals and castor bean cake organic fertilizer was applied once a month (40 g per pot for both). Plant height and the number of leaves and shoots were evaluated one year after the beginning of the trial. The organic fertilizer on its own and with EPL (T7, T8 and T9) produced the tallest plants and highest number of leaves. Organic fertilizer with 0.1 and 0.2% EPL produced the most shoots. For all variables, chemical fertilizer, both with and without EPL, was less effective than organic fertilizer with EPL and treatment with only EPL was less effective than treatment with organic fertilizer.

O caruncho-do-feijão Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) é uma importante praga de grãos de feijão armazenado nas regiões tropicais. A eficiência do caulim [com ou sem óleo de nim (Azadirachta indica)] e terra diatomácea (TD) (tratamento padrão) foi estudada em laboratório com o intuito de obter alternativas para o controle químico deste inseto. Insetos foram confinados em frascos de plástico com feijão tratado com caulim (2, 4 e 8g kg-1), caulim + nim [2g kg-1(5% óleo de nim)], terra diatomácea (1g kg-1) e controle. Mortalidade de insetos adultos, número de ovos e emergência da geração F1 foram avaliados. Caulim causou a mortalidade de Z. subfasciatus, porém foram necessários maiores períodos e doses que a TD para promover elevada mortalidade (100% ou aproximadamente). Os tratamentos com caulim também afetaram o comportamento da fêmea, pois muitos ovos foram colocados nas paredes dos frascos. O número de adultos emergidos (F1) foi similar entre a TD e o caulim; portanto, caulim constitui uma ferramenta promissora para o manejo de Z. subfasciatus. A mistura de caulim e óleo de nim não foi eficiente no controle de Z. subfasciatus.

The Mexican bean weevil Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) is an important pest of stored beans in tropical regions. The efficiency of kaolin [with or without neem (Azadirachta indica) oil] and diatomaceous earth (DE) (standard treatment) was studied in laboratory aiming to obtain alternatives for chemical control of this insect. Insects were confined in plastic vials containing beans treated with kaolin (2, 4 and 8g kg-1), kaolin + neem [2g kg-1(5% neem oil)], diatomaceous earth (1g kg-1) and control. Mortality of adult insects, number of eggs and F1generation beetles emergency were assessed. Kaolin caused mortality of Z. subfasciatus, however higher periods and doses than DE were necessary to promote high mortality (100% or close). Kaolin treatments also affected female behavior because many eggs were placed in the vials walls. Number of emerged adults (F1) was similar between DE and kaolin; hence, kaolin constitutes a promising tool to the management of Z. subfasciatus. The mixture of kaolin and neem oil was not efficient in the control of Z. subfasciatus.

Uma série de compostos, sintéticos e comerciais, análogos ao 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno, um cairomônio de Diabrotica speciosa, juntamente com outros compostos comerciais atrativos para outras espécies de Diabrotica, tiveram suas atividades testadas frente à D. speciosa. Armadilhas de copos amarelos contendo os compostos foram instaladas em plantação de feijão. As avaliações foram realizadas 24 horas depois. Armadilhas com 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno capturaram significativamente mais insetos do que armadilhas testemunha. Armadilhas com análogos do 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno não capturaram mais insetos que as armadilhas testemunha. Os resultados mostraram que a posição e a natureza dos substituintes, juntamente com a aromaticidade verificada na estrutura do composto natural, são cruciais para a atratividade.

Several synthetic and commercial analogs of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene, a kairomone of Diabrotica speciosa, along with other compounds already shown to be attractive to other species of Diabrotica, were tested as attractant to D. speciosa. Yellow cup traps were lured with the compounds and installed in a common bean field. Assessments were conducted 24 h later. 1,4-dimethoxybenzene lured traps caught significantly more beetles than the control traps. Captures of traps lured with 1,4-dimethoxybenzene analogs did not differ from the control traps. Results showed that position and nature of the substituents on the aromatic ring played a crucial role in the activity of the natural compound. The aromatic ring was also very important to the activity of the kairomone.

Besouros Microtheca punctigera (Achard) são pragas sérias de plantas hospedeiras da família Brassicaceae. Efeitos das concentrações (0,00; 0,25; 0,50; e 1,00%) do óleo emulsionável de nim (Azadirachta indica Meliaceae) sobre parâmetros de comportamento e biologia de M. punctigera foram investigados em laboratório. Nabiça (Raphanus raphanistrum L.) foi a planta hospedeira utilizada. Ensaios de preferência alimentar com múltipla e sem chance de escolha foram conduzidos. Múltiplos efeitos do óleo de nim foram observados. Machos foram repelidos pelo óleo de nim em teste de múltipla escolha. Adultos (múltipla escolha) e larvas (múltipla e sem chance de escolha) sofreram deterrência. A mortalidade de larvas foi mais elevada nos tratamentos com óleo de nim que no tratamento controle. Futuras investigações são sugeridas para testar o óleo de nim no manejo de pragas no campo.

The effects of concentrations (0.00, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00%) of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica - Meliaceae) oil emulsion on the behavioral and biological parameters of M. punctigera were investigated in the laboratory. Wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum L.) host plant was used. Multiple and no-choice feeding preference assays were conducted which shown multiple effects. The males were repelled by the neem oil in multiple-choice assay. The adult (multiple-choice) and larvae (multiple and no-choice) feeding were deterred. The larvae mortality was higher in the neem oil treated than the control leaves. Further investigations are suggested to test neem oil in the management of the pest in the field.

Diabrotica speciosa (Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae) é uma importante praga polífaga na América Latina. Seu controle é realizado com inseticidas sintéticos, o que causa problemas ambientais. Desse modo, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a isca amilácea de cucurbitacina (Lagenaria vulgaris L.) associada ao inseticida carbaril no controle de D. speciosa em laboratório. Foram realizados testes de múltipla escolha pareados e confinamento com insetos adultos. Os tratamentos foram: isca amilácea de cucurbitacina, isca + carbaril, apenas carbaril e a testemunha (água destilada). As soluções foram pulverizadas em plantas de milho mantidas em casa-de-vegetação. Folhas foram retiradas para realização dos ensaios em laboratório e sete avaliações (três, cinco, sete, dez, 12, 14 e 17 dias após a aplicação) foram realizadas. Foram avaliados o consumo foliar e a mortalidade. A isca de cucurbitacina exerceu efeito fagoestimulante aos adultos de D. speciosa. A adição da isca ao carbaril aumentou a eficiência do inseticida.

Diabrotica speciosa (Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae) is an important polyphagous pest in Latin America. The control is made using synthetic insecticides, which cause environmental problems. Then, objective this work was to study the cucurbitacin (Lagenaria vulgaris L.) starch based associated with carbaril insecticide for D. speciosa control, in the laboratory. Multiple-choice and no-choice tests with adult insects were realized. The treatments were: cucurbitacin starch based bait, cucurbitacin starch based bait plus carbaril insecticide, insecticide carbaril alone and control (distillated water). Corn plants were sprayed with insecticide solutions in greenhouse and leaves were removed. Leaves were offered to insects and seven evaluations (three, five, seven, ten, 12, 14 and 17 days after applied) were achieved. Feeding leaf area and mortality were evaluated. Cucurbitacin starch based bait elicited phagostimulant effect on adults of D. speciosa. Addition of cucurbitacin starch based bait on carbaril insecticide increased insecticide efficiency.

Doru luteipes consome lagartas de Spodoptera frugiperda, que é atualmente a principal praga da cultura do milho no Brasil. Normalmente, se 70% das plantas tivessem o predador, a praga seria mantida abaixo do nível de dano econômico. Entretanto, o predador ocorre após a praga danificar as plantas. Assim, a disponibilidade de materiais que atraíssem e antecipassem a presença do predador na lavoura poderia reduzir populações da praga. Desta forma, estudou-se em laboratório a atratividade de dietas artificiais para machos e fêmeas do predador D. luteipes. Os tratamentos foram: pupa desidratada e moída do bicho-da-seda; pólen misto, nas quantidades de 0,05; 0,1; 0,2; 0,5 e 1,0g para ambas as dietas. Em olfatômetro, os estímulos da dieta foram comparados à testemunha. Foram realizadas 30 repetições. Os resultados mostraram que houve atratividade tanto para machos quanto para fêmeas. Em geral, a atração foi aumentada com o aumento da quantidade das dietas. Estudos adicionais foram propostos para testar a viabilidade do uso dos materiais como estratégia de manejo da praga no campo.

Doru luteipes consumes larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda, which is at this moment the main pest of maize crop in Brazil. In general, if 70% of the plants had this predator the pest would be kept under the threshold of economic damage. However, the predator occurs after the pest damages the plants. Thus, the availability of materials that would attract and anticipate the presence of predator in the field,could reduce pest populations. In such a way, it was studied in the laboratory the attractiveness of artificial diets for males and females of the D. luteipes. The treatments were: ground dehydrated pupa of the silk worm and pollen mixture in the amounts of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 e 1.0g, for both the diets The diet stimulus were compared to control using a olfactometer. In general, attraction increased with rising amounts of the diets. Further investigations were proposed to test the viability of the usage of the materials to manage the pest in the field.

O besouro Astylus variegatus (Germ.) (Coleoptera: Melyridae) é freqüentemente encontrado em flores onde se alimenta de pólen. Respostas de A. variegatus a atraentes voláteis florais foram estudadas em campos de feijão, Phaseolus vulgaris L. Armadilhas, originalmente desenvolvidas para capturar Diabrotica speciosa (Germ.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), consistiram de garrafas plástica (2 L) com 150 perfurações (5 mm de diâmetro) pintadas com tinta amarelo ouro contendo no seu interior uma fita plástica (3,5 <FONT FACE=Symbol>´</FONT> 25,0 cm) com pó seco de frutos de Lagenaria vulgaris (L.) (0,28% de cucurbitacina B estimulante alimentar e arrestante para diabroticíneos) pulverizados com inseticida carbaril. Os tratamentos foram: 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno (um ou dois liberadores por armadilha); 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno + indol; 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno + cinamaldeído e testemunha (sem volátil). As taxas de liberação dos semioquímicos (por 10 dias) foram de aproximadamente 32 mg dia-1 por liberador em condições de laboratório. Armadilhas iscadas com 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno capturaram mais insetos que a testemunha, três e sete dias após instalação das armadilhas. Dez dias após o início dos experimentos, não foram verificadas diferenças entre os tratamentos, no número de besouros capturados. Capturas foram maiores no tratamento com 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno + cinamaldeído do que no 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno sozinho na primeira avaliação. Adição do indole ao 1,4-dimetoxibenzeno não aumentou as capturas.

The beetle Astylus variegatus (Germ.) (Coleoptera: Melyridae) is frequently found in flowers feeding on pollen. Responses of A. variegatus to volatile floral attractants were studied in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) fields. Traps originally designed to capture Diabrotica speciosa (Germ.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), consisted of plastic bottles (2 L) with 150 holes (5-mm diameter) yellow gold painted and containing inside a plastic strip (3.5 <FONT FACE=Symbol>´</FONT> 25 cm) with Lagenaria vulgaris (L.) powder (0.28% B cucurbitacin - feeding stimulant and arrestant for diabroticites) sprayed with carbaril insecticide. Treatments consisted of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (one or two dispensers per trap), 1,4-dimethoxybenze + indole, 1,4-dimethoxybenzene + cinnameldehyde and control. Volatile average release rates (over ten days) was approximately 32 mg day-1 per dispenser under laboratory conditions. 1,4-dimethoxybenzene-lured traps caught significantly more beetles than the control, three and seven days after trap setting. Ten days after the onset of the experiment, there were no differences in number of beetles caught by treatments. Captures were higher in the 1,4-dimethoxybenzene + cinnamaldehyde treatment than in 1,4-dimethoxybenzene only in the first assessment. Adding indole to 1,4-dimethoxybenzene did not improve beetle captures.

Armadilhas iscadas com semioquímicos têm sido propostas para manejo da broca-do-café. O cafeeiro é cultivado em condições ambientais diversas que podem afetar a eficiência das armadilhas. Vários modelos de armadilha e variações nos modelos são utilizados. Uma série de experimentos de campo objetivou avaliar capturas da broca-do-café em armadilhas numa lavoura de café semi-adensado no Norte do Paraná. Uma garrafa plástica (2 L) com uma abertura (13 × 18 cm) constituiu a armadilha. O etanol (E), metanol (M) e óleo de café, sozinhos, não incrementaram as capturas quando se utilizaram armadilhas transparentes com um frasco difusor com furo de 2 mm; armadilhas iscadas com as misturas 1 : 1, 1 : 2 e 1 : 3 de etanol (E) + metanol (M) capturaram quantidades similares e superiores à testemunha; sinergismo ocorreu pela mistura de etanol e metanol; a adição do óleo de café às misturas não incrementou as capturas. Armadilhas com taxas de liberação da mistura E:M (1:1) de 342, 400, 428 e 710 mg dia-1 capturaram quantidades similares. Armadilhas verdes transparentes, transparentes e vermelhas, iscadas com E:M (1:1) (642 mg dia-1) capturaram quantidades similares. Foi observada interação entre as cores (verde transparente, transparente, vermelha) e taxas de liberação dos semioquímicos (540, 720 e 1100 mg dia-1). Armadilhas verdes transparentes, quando iscadas com doses de 720 mg dia-1 da mistura 1:1 de E:M, capturaram 2,3 e 4,4 mais insetos do que 540 e 1100 mg dia-1; e capturaram 3,2 mais insetos do que armadilhas transparentes e vermelhas.

Traps lured with semiochemical have been proposed to manage the coffee berry borer, coffee planting is however made under several environmental conditions that may affect the efficacy of traps. Several trap designs and variations were proposed and, therefore, a series of field experiments was carried out to capture coffee berry bores in traps disposed in a low density coffee plantations in the Northern part of the State of Paraná, Brazil. Traps were composed of plastic bottles (2 L) with a window (13 × 18 cm). Ethanol (E), Methanol (M) and coffee oil alone did not improve the capture when transparent traps with a 2 mm hole in the vial dispenser were used; traps lured with E : M mixtures (1:1, 1:2, 1:3) caught similar and higher number of insects than the control. There was synergism with the mixing of E and M; the addition of coffee oil to the mixtures did not improve the capture. Trap lured with E : M (1:1) mixtures at 342, 400, 428 and 710 mg caught similar numbers of insects. Transparent green trap, transparent trap and red trap lured with 642 mg day-1 of the E + M (1:1) mixture caught similar numbers of insects. Interaction between colors (transparent green, transparent and red) and semiochemical release rates (540, 720 and 1100 mg day-1) was observed. Transparent green trap, when lured with 720 mg day-1 of the 1 : 1 E : M mixture caught 2.3 and 4.4 times more insects than 540 and 1100 mg day-1; and caught 3.2 times more insects than transparent and red trap at the same release rates.
